A Brief History of the Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos are a professional American football franchise based in Denver, Colorado. They are members of the West Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Broncos began play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL), and joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.
The team has played their home games at Sports Authority Field at Mile High since 2001. The Broncos are currently owned by Patrick Bowlen. Bowlen purchased the team in 1984 from Edgar Kaiser Jr., son of businessman Edgar F. Kaiser.
The Early Years: 1960-1969
The Denver Broncos were founded on August 14, 1959, when minor league baseball owner Bob Howsam was awarded an American Football League (AFL) charter franchise. The Broncos won three AFL titles in their first four years of existence, making them the fastest expansion team ever to win championships. In Super Bowl XII, they became the first AFC team to defeat an NFC team, when they defeated the Dallas Cowboys 27-10.
The Modern Era: 1970-present
In 1970, the AFL and NFL merged, and the Broncos were assigned to the AFC West division. They have won eight AFC championships since 1977, and three Super Bowls—in 1998 (XXXII), 1999 (XXXIII), and 2016 (50). As of 2019, they have appeared in more Super Bowls than any other AFC team. They have had six head coaches selected as either Associated Press Coach of the Year or Sporting News NFL Coach of the Year.

Greg Penner is the current chairman of Walmart, one of the world’s largest retailers. He is also a former managing partner at Madrone Capital Partners, a private equity firm. Penner has been a member of Walmart’s board of directors since 2008 and assumed the role of chairman in 2016.
Penner was born in Canada and received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of British Columbia. He later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. Prior to joining Walmart, Penner worked at Bain & Company, an international management consulting firm.
Madrone Capital Partners
In 2000, Penner joined Madrone Capital Partners, a San Francisco-based private equity firm. Madrone was founded by Walter Kistler and Robert Kain, two former partners at Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., one of the world’s largest private equity firms.
At Madrone, Penner focused on investments in the consumer and retail sectors. He served on the boards of directors of several companies, including Petco Animal Supplies, Inc., 7-Eleven, Inc., and J.Crew Group, Inc.
Walmart
In 2008, Penner was appointed to Walmart’s board of directors. He served on the company’s audit committee and Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee before being elected as chairman in 2016.
As chairman, Penner oversees all aspects of Walmart’s business operations and strategy. He also serves on the company’s executive committee. Under his leadership, Walmart has continued to grow and expand its reach globally. The company now operates more than 11,700 stores in 27 countries around the world.
