The Baldplate Inn is located in Estes Park and was originated in 1911 when Gordon and Ethel Mace were on their honeymoon. It originally started out as a small Homestead cabin to fulfill the requirements of the Homestead Act. To supplement their income, they build small tourist cabins which were a huge success. The Baldplate was opened in 1917 officially, with running water, electricity and indoor plumbing! Named after Earl Biggers mystery novel, Seven Keys to Baldplate, the Inn followed the story line in the novel and gave each visitor to the Inn their very own key. When metal became expensive during WWI, the Inn had to stop giving away keys. So loyal guests started their own tradition by bringing back the best and most exotic key each year. Their collection, which is displayed, boasts over 20,000 keys. Some are even from the Pentagon, Westminster Abbey and Mozart’s Wine Cellar. To visit or book a night visit www.bladplateinn.com
