Relive the Constitution

Constitution Hall, located on Blake Street since 1866 was built for $45,000. In the winter of 1875-76, the delegated to the state’s constitutional convention met here to draw up a state constitution in anticipation of Colorado being admitted to the Union as the 36th state. Third time was a charm, after being rejected as a state twice; it was finally approved on March 3, 1875. Delegates met here again to draft a basic charter to the state to present to the people. It passed 15,433 votes to 4,062 and President Grant declared Colorado a state on August 1, 1876. The marker is on the south-west side of the last building on that block, 1509 Blake Street.
